Committee kicking into high gear for celebration

With the close of the 2018 Summer Moon Festival, the 2019 Committee is kicking into high gear with less than a year remaining to plan for the 50th anniversary of the historic moon landing and Astronaut — and Wapakoneta native — Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon.

“This year we’ve had just a small glimpse of how excited people are about celebrating the 50th anniversary of Mr. Armstrong’s historic achievement,” said Rachel Barber, chair/facilitator of the 2019 Committee. “Our group, for example, is pointing to the success of the first souvenir item we’ve released, the t-shirts featuring our exclusive logo. People purchased them pretty quickly.”

The logo, featuring an astronaut in a Apollo-era space suit also denotes the “First On the Moon” theme, as well as “Wapakoneta, Ohio” to share the city’s pride in Armstrong’s accomplishments. The committee is on its third printing of souvenir shirts.

“We commissioned an area artist to create this logo exclusively for the 2019 Committee,” Barber said. “We’ll be using this on our written materials, on our social media and on commemorative items we create for the celebration.”
