With the Petersburg Cemetery just over their shoulders, members of the Petersburg Parishes gathered to honor their heritage on Tuesday, and dedicated an Ohio Historical Marker.
Auglaize County's eighth state Historical Marker, located on Santa Fe-New Knoxville Road, just outside Fryburg, sits on the site of the former St. Peter and Paul Church, the mother church of the four local Catholic churches that make up the Petersburg Parishes.
St. Joseph in Wapakoneta, St. John the Evangelist in Fryburg, St. Lawrence in Rhine, and Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Botkins all derived from the parish housed in the log church built in the 1830s at the Petersburg site, which served the wave of German immigrants that settled in the area.
