W-G school levy, State Issue 1 pass, governor's race set

The voters in the five affected Auglaize County precincts approved Waynesfield-Goshen Local School District’s permanent improvement levy renewal by a 406 to 174-vote margin Tuesday during Ohio’s primary election.

Voters in the St. Mary’s City School District were not as generous, defeating their levy by a 623-vote difference. Details are included in a separate story located in today’s edition.

Ohio voters have overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment that will change the way the battleground state draws congressional districts. Auglaize County voters went the way of the rest of the state Tuesday and approved State Issue 1 by a 5,455 to 2,474-vote margin during Tuesday’s primary election.

Issue 1 on state ballots Tuesday had support from both Democrats and Republicans and faced virtually no organized opposition.

The proposal was modeled after new map-making rules for Ohio legislative districts that voters strongly supported in 2016.

The latest proposal aims to curb gerrymandering, the partisan manipulation of political boundaries that's seen as a cause of partisanship, gridlock and incivility in Washington.
