Local woman to open homeschooling cooperative

Corrine Corbett wants to be the person who sees the “moment.”

“For me personally, I like being the one to see the light bulb moment; to see my kid read for the first time is a neat thing,” said the mother of six who home schools her children. “And I enjoy being able to personalize their lesson plans.”

Corbett’s dedication to home schooling led her to organizing the Wapak Christian Homeschool Co-op, a brand new educational cooperative that will begin classes Aug. 30 for the 2018-2019 school year. She and three other homeschooling moms have developed the local opportunity to supplement the curriculums used by other home schoolers.

The co-op will be housed at Harvest Baptist Church and held Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. until noon. Corbett said she’d been thinking about organizing a cooperative for some time.

“The other co-ops are 30 minutes away,” she said, citing Harrod and Celina as the closest locations. And while she has participated in the Celina co-op, sometimes organizing six kids for the half-hour drive was a challenge.
