Sleet, snow test winter readiness

The city is ready for whatever comes in terms of severe weather. Today’s storm, though, is putting preparations to the test.

“We normally pretreat roads with beet juice,” Wapakoneta Safety-Service Director Chad Scott said. “With the rain, that’s not possible because it gets too diluted to do any good.”

Wapakoneta has five trucks with blades and salt boxes, with two additional trucks with blades only, Scott said.

“We don’t use grit anymore because it ended up in the sewers,” Scott said. “We’ll have to see what the day brings.”

Scott added that the salt that is on the trucks is all the salt the city has.
