Severe cold calls for caution

People all over Ohio and in Auglaize County are feeling the chill from the recent cold snap this week, and the deep freeze is set to carry on well into the new year.

With the cold weather comes danger, as the cold can be harmful to yourself, and even your pets.

John Franks, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Wilmington, offered up some tips for combating the cold. And according to Franks, it's really pretty simple.

"Just use common sense," he said. "If you're going to be outside, make sure you have on the appropriate clothing. Check to make sure your jacket is suitable. Even if you think it will be fine, it may not be suitable for single digit temperatures."

A proper hat and gloves are also crucial, according to Franks. "A knit hat or gloves won't be sufficient," he said. "The wind is going to blow right through that."

You also don't want to put yourself in a situation where it makes the conditions worse.

"Don't create wind," Franks said. "You don't want to be riding in the back of a pick up truck when it's this cold out. Or more realistically, riding a snowmobile or something of that nature."
