Many years ago, Wapakoneta senior-to-be Luke Steinke's grandfather started a family tradition that would be passed down from generation to generation.
Steinke's grandfather, who grew up on a farm, began showing cows at the Auglaize County Fair and enjoyed it so much that he showed it to his son and others in the family. It wasn't long before Steinke's father and uncles began showing cows at the Auglaize County Fair and got to see why they enjoyed it so much.
Steinke's father eventually introduced Steinke and his siblings to it and now Steinke has been showing cows for over seven years. He said he wouldn't trade the farm life for anything in the world.
Steinke, who enjoys that lifestyle on a daily basis at his family's farm two minutes away from downtown Wapakoneta, showed a dairy holstein cow at the the Junior Fair Dairy Show and Showmanship. He's won grand champion, reserve champion and first place in showmanship at the fair.
Many who also get that very opportunity were at the Junior Fair Dairy Show and Showmanship that took place at 10 a.m. Tuesday in show barn 1. Much like the District 12 shows, the Junior Fair Dairy Show and Showmanship opened with the color breed show, then showmanship and holstein breeds shows. There were 86 entrees for 4-H members.
The show began at 10 a.m. and ran until 4 p.m. Showmanship is for kids ages 8-18. The Junior Fair Dairy Show and Showmanship was open to 4-H members only.
