Wapakoneta VFW Post 8445 Commander Delmar Merricle wants young veterans to know they're welcome to become members.

"I want to welcome all the young veterans in — female or male,” Merricle said. “These young veterans, they're looking for a place to come out and enjoy themselves. I want to invite them out to see what we've got."

Interested veterans can call or stop out at the VFW for an application. Those who have fought in combat or been in a foreign war are eligible for regular membership. The cost to join each year is $30. After three years, veterans can go for a life membership.

"We're trying to break the barrier of the perception of well, it's just a bunch of old guys sitting in there, and they don't want the younger generation in,” Quartermaster Scott Dues said.
