More county roads to be paved thanks to grant

The county will be resurfacing around 14 miles of county roads in 2016 with hot mix asphalt pavement, but only largely due to a grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission.

Auglaize County Engineer Doug Reinhart discussed the county’s 2016 road improvement plans with the county commissioners Tuesday. According to Reinhart’s estimate, 14.1 miles out of the 350 miles of roadway the county maintains will be resurfaced. Last year, only 6.36 miles of county roads were resurfaced.

The aforementioned grant will cover $765,000 of the estimated contract cost of $944,030 to repave the 14 miles, Reinhart noted, and the estimated cost to pave one mile of road with a 1 ¼-inch layer of hot mix is $67,000. The grant is only available every four years, he said.

“Without the grant, we’d be resurfacing three or four miles maybe,” Reinhart said.
