When Kathleen Pellington took over as choral director at Wapakoneta High School last school year, she brought with her a passion for a cappella music.

In addition to starting up an a cappella group, Midweek, she has also kicked off A Cappella University, which lasts a day and is set up as a series of sessions during which participants from all over and all ages can learn all about the style of music from various professional groups. Last Saturday was the second time the annual event was held.

“It was so successful,” Pellington said. “We had more participants than last year and more guest groups, which just made for a bigger and even more fun experience.”

This year, she saw improvements in those who had attended the year before, she said.

“Everyone that had been there the year before was able to learn music a lot faster and was just used to the style of a cappella, which I just think helped with getting everything down quicker and adding in that choreography,” Pellington said. “They knew what was going to be expected and what was going to happen this year.”

The people who attended last year were able to help those new to the event, she said.
