'First Man' Nominated for 4 Oscars

Oscar nomination watchers gathered at the Alpha Cafe in downtown Wapakoneta Tuesday morning to be among the first to learn if First Man, the Neil Armstrong bio-pic, was in the running for any of the top awards. On hand were Joe Presar, Jackie Martell, Jessica Muhlemkamp, Judy Presar, Deb Fischer, Land Tomlinson, Laura Clementz, Donna Grube, Karen Tullis, Sandy Davis and Lynn Skaggs.

“First Man,” the 2018 movie adapted from the book of the same name, was nominated for four Oscars Tuesday.

The film is in contention for production design, sound editing, sound mixing and visual effects. The announcement of all Oscar nominees began at 8:20 a.m. Ohio time, and brought a couple dozen local residents to the Alpha Cafe for a morning of anticipation and celebration.

“First Man,” directed by Damien Chazelle and written by Josh Singer, stars Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong, and Claire Foy as his wife Jan; it follows the years leading up to the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon in 1969.

Wapakoneta celebrated the release of the movie in October with a gala dinner preceding the first local showing of the movie. The event was a fund-raiser for the 2019 Celebration Committee; committee members promised another event when the movie was nominated for and Oscar. Each time the movie was mentioned as a nominee, those in the Alpha let out a cheer.

While plans for an Oscar night party are not finalized, members of the committee are working on...
