Auglaize Dog Warden stays busy

Auglaize County’s Dog Warden Russ Bailey stays busy.

He has been a K-9 handler since his Air Force days in the 1980s, and previously worked for the St. Marys Police Department. Those experiences help him deal with the variety in his work.

“We deal with almost everything,” he said, “anywhere from purebreds to mutts. If I had to pick one dog that we get more than anything, it’s pit bulls, or pit bull mixes,” Bailey said. “We get two or three of them to every other dog.”

He said the dogs are popular with younger people, but could only speculate as to why they get so many.

“So many of them are dumped, and unfortunately very few get claimed by the original owner,” Bailey said.

Bailey explained the Dog Warden’s office receives no money from the county and are funded by dog license sales and citations. The goal for this year was...
