BOE considers future of ESC partnership

Wapakoneta City Schools will again enter into a contract with the Auglaize County Educational Service Center to provide specialized academic and support services to the district, but a three to one vote, with one abstention, at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting casts some doubt on the future of the partnership.

Josh Little, vice president of the board, casted the lone 'no' vote on the contract–which spans the 2018-2019 school year–with president Ron Mertz abstaining.

Little, while still praising the quality of the services provided by the ESC and acknowledging that it would increases costs, expressed his desire to bring some of those services into the district's control.
"These are good people that are doing it now, but the value in bringing it in-house is that they become a part of our bigger family, a part of our culture," he said. "And I just am philosophically opposed to subcontracting or privatizing work that could be done by great people that are hired within our district."
