Sacrifice was honored during Memorial Day Services in Wapakoneta and Buckland Monday, and those attending were urged to remember those who died in sacrifice and those who were left behind when veterans gave their lives for their country.
In Buckland, services were held after the annual parade; the Rev. Matt Place was the keynote speaker. He quoted Acts, noting the message there says God is touched by memorial offerings. If that is true, Place said, a quick look at the flags throughout the village cemetery, which represent those who gave their lives, so Americans can enjoy freedom, must certainly touch God today.
He also asked those attending to “reflect on those who carry the burden of remembering those who sacrificed their lives,” because friends and families are those who continue to suffer.
His remarks were preceded by a statement from Fred Waltz, one of the veterans recogni zed during the service. Waltz, a Wapakoneta native who now lives in Wisconsin, served as a U.S. Marine for 21 years, from 1970-1991.
