St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wapakoneta will be celebrating its 150th anniversary as a congregation this year as well as their long and varied history.
The congregation was founded in 1868, moving into the old church–which still stands today–on West Auglaize Street in 1869.
The church’s history can be traced back to early German Lutheran settlers living in Auglaize County.
Three groups met in the county: St. Mark’s in Clay Township, St. John’s in Pusheta Township, and the German Evangelical Lutheran St. Paul Congregation in Wapakoneta.
Today’s Wapakoneta based St. Mark’s is an offshoot of that St. Paul’s congregation.
For Joe Landry, who has worked for the church in various capacities in nearly 30 years as a member of the church, including writing the newsletter, is proud of that long history and the church’s humble beginnings.
