On Saturday a special flag raising ceremony was held in at the site of the future Veterans Memorial to signify the completion of Phase 1 of the project.

Three flags were raised in the brisk and cold wind: The U.S. flag was raised by Wapakoneta VFW Post, a flag that commemorated POW/MIA soldiers was raised by the organization the Chained Eagles, and the Ohio Flag was raised by the Waynesfield American Legion Post.

Many people braved the harsh weather to show their support to the troops and to the memorial, including Mayor Mike Ridenour, his wife, other members of the memorial committee; the Wapakoneta VFW; and the commander and vice commander of the District 2 VFW, both of whom have ties to Auglaize County.

Wapakoneta is now the home of a very special and unique dog. A Golden Retriever named Sammy became a hero to two Auglaize County locals as Sammy came across their wallets on two separate occasions on her daily walks with her people.

One of Sammy’s owners, Janet Schuler, told the story of how Sammy came across the wallets. One wallet was found up at the fairgrounds and was dropped off at the Sheriff’s office and the second one found at a city park.

On Nov. 12 the Wapakoneta Police Department made a post on their Facebook page praising Sammy and ended up giving her an award, in the form of dog biscuits.

Retiring Wapakoneta Fire Chief Kendall Krites has seen quite a few changes over the 34 years he has been with the department.

Krites joined the department on April 12, 1981. He was promoted to Captain on Aug. 21, 1991, and made chief Jan. 13, 2006. All of these events serve as highlights of his career.

“Definitely being promoted to captain and then to chief were highlights of my career,” Krites said. “I think everybody aspires to move up and be good at your job. The other thing I’m proud of is that I’ve been an instructor since ’91, and I’ve taught a lot of classes. Hopefully, I’ve helped educate a few firefighters along the way.”

Krites also shared an important goal he accomplished during his tenure, including moving firefighters "into a mindset of officer preparedness." He also noted the change in fires and firefighting over the years.

According to a news release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, on Sunday at approximately 1:30 a.m., an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper was confronted by a male suspect. The trooper was parked on Main St. near Livingston St. in Celina, working on paperwork in his patrol car from a previous incident. The man parked his 1991 Chevrolet S-10 across the street and approached the trooper’s car on foot. The trooper had not had any contact with the man prior to this incident. The man immediately became confrontational with the trooper, ordering him out of his vehicle. The trooper exited his vehicle to deal with the suspect. Shortly after the trooper exited his vehicle, the man brandished a 9mm handgun and pointed it at the trooper. The trooper attempted to disarm the suspect but was unsuccessful. The trooper broke contact with the man and shots were fired. The suspect was struck by rounds from the trooper’s handgun.

Once the man was secured the trooper and officers from the Celina Police Department who responded after hearing the shots rendered first-aid until EMS arrived. The man was transported by Celina Fire and EMS to Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater and later flown by Careflight to St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, where he succumbed to his injuries. The trooper was not injured during the incident.

The male suspect was later identified as Justin D. McHenry, age 22, of Celina. Investigators from the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Celina Police Department are on scene and the investigation is ongoing. At this time it is not known why McHenry confronted and pointed a handgun at the trooper.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed that the trooper involved was from the Wapakoneta post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The trooper's identity has not yet been revealed.

None other than Santa Claus himself made a stop in Cridersville on Saturday at the Breakfast with Santa event put on by the Cridersville Lions Club at Cridersville United Methodist Church. The event, which was free to the public, was sponsored by Cridersville Health Care Center, which provided all the food for the special event.

Local children and their parents and family members were greeted by Santa and then got their pictures taken with St. Nick while telling him what they wanted for Christmas. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a breakfast of pancakes and sausage patties.

Cridersville Lions Club President Stacey Cook explained, “In years past when we would go out when I was a kid and get a picture with Santa … your family keeps that picture from year to year and watch you grow. So we offer that so they have kind of a keepsake.”

There are many shops on Auglaize Street, some are new and some have stood the test of time. One of those shops in the latter category is Dad’s Toy Shop, which at the beginning of November celebrated 40 years in business. Over the years they’ve seen continued support for the shop and an expanded inventory.

Dad’s Toy Shop was opened in 1975 by the Metz Family. It is now owned by brothers J.P. and Rodney, who took over after it was turned over to them by their parents Katie and James.

A lot has changed in the store J.P. Metz said, a fact evidenced by the merchandise they carry in the store.

Since the shop opened, the hobby industry has experienced many updates and the store has expanded its product line, which includes model kits, RC cars, model trains, aircraft and boats and some of the latest items, like drones.

According to a witness statement from Dustin Selhorst, who was a passenger in the car, the driver was allegedly intoxicated by air duster. Selhorst said in his statement that both Weber and Hale, 18, were "hitting it," referring to the air duster, prior to the crash.

Wapakoneta High School senior Dan Reichenbach was recently named the Daughters of the American Revolution Lima Chapter Good Citizens Award Recipient.

As part of the contest, Reichenbach had to complete an application and a resume. He also had to write two statements, one about his service to his community and another about the four qualities of the DAR: service, dependability, leadership and patriotism. In addition to all this, Reichenbach had to write an essay that was 550 words or less in two hours about a topic that wasn’t revealed until the day of the essay.

For winning, he received a trophy and a scholarship of around $120. He is now eligible to compete at the district level of the DAR contest. His information has already been sent on to the next level and he will be notified in late March if he has been selected, he said.

“I've never won this kind of thing before, so it was definitely a good feeling that I can excel in something as long as I put my mind to it,” Reichenbach said.

Artist Viet Vo poses with the window mural he painted for the Auglaize Antique Mall building. The theme of the mural is a sunset sky with scenery in the background.

On the rear side of the building that houses the Auglaize Antique Mall, a beautiful blue and orange sunset can be seen on the windows that gives the effect of peering inside to a glimpse of an outdoor sky. This “window mural,” as Auglaize Antique Mall owner Jack Lambert calls it, is the handiwork of local artist Viet Vo, who also painted the mural at Al’s Woody’s a few months ago.

The idea for the mural was a collaboration between Lambert and Vo, who ultimately settled on the theme of “a gorgeous Wapakoneta sunset.” The work also incorporates images of the moon to tie in with Wapakoneta being known as “Moon City.” Lambert explained that he wanted his building to add to the visually aesthetic effect to go along with the River Scape project the city is planning along the Auglaize River.

Vo mentioned that the project took “countless” hours. Lambert provided the sheet metal panels, and then Vo cut and painted them with spray paint. The panels were then installed into the windows once completed.

Scott Moell, owner of the Wapakoneta Arby's, presents Children's Hometown Holiday Chairman Elaine Poppe with a $5,000 check.

It’s almost here.

Although the Cookie Contest and the Gift Wrap Contest were held in early November, the main events of the Children’s Hometown Holiday are only a day away.

The CHH is put on by more than 300 volunteers, led by chairman Elaine Poppe.

“We are a non profit with no paid employees and we raise the funds to put on this event with donations from businesses, friends, and even family,” Poppe said. “Our mission is to ensure that every child in our community has a wonderful fun-filled holiday weekend that costs the children nothing. Because everything is free to them, every child is treated equally, no matter their financial status.”

Poppe made the comments following receipt of a $5,000 donation from Scott Moell, owner of the Wapakoneta Arby’s restaurant, with $1,000 to be dispensed over the next five years. Poppe said Moell’s gift will help defray the $25,000 expenses of the CHH. In thanking Moell for the donation, Poppe added, “Scott has Christmas and children in his heart.”

As in previous years, the annual event packs a lot of activity into the weekend. Poppe suggests parents help their children select events that are age appropriate.

See Thursday's print edition of the Wapakoneta Daily News for a full schedule of Children's Hometown Holiday activities and events.
