More snow and extremely bitter winds are becoming a threat, so much so that the Wapakoneta Police Department posted a Wind Chill Advisory on the Facebook page.
Of course people aren’t the only ones who suffer from the cold. Many people have heard the expression “if you’re cold, they’re cold,” which of course is talking about the pets.
“Just like humans (your pets) can get frostbite,” said Deb Logan, manager of the Auglaize County Humane Society. “They can get it on their ears and various other spots, so it's really important to bring them from the cold.”

The Heritage Trails Park District has been using social media to help build a support base in the county, and the district’s staff discussed Tuesday doing more marketing to get their name out there and rally even more support.
Administrative Assistant Terry McDonald talked to the park commissioners about her work with the park district’s Facebook page over the past three months or so. According to statistics McDonald viewed through Facebook as a page administrator, the page went from 308 likes on Sept. 22 to 419 likes on Jan. 17, which totaled an increase of more than 100 likes for the page in roughly three months.
“Our community on that Facebook page is growing pretty considerably in the last three months,” McDonald noted. “The likes have went up considerably.”
McDonald said she believes the reason for the spike in likes could be in part due to her effort to personally interact with people at events, such as the Walk With Nature and other hikes. She said she specifically told people about the Facebook page and notified them that there may be photos posted on the page of different hike participants on the trails.

“We're trying to get more involved with the community itself and trying to take advantage of every opportunity we have to celebrate different holidays with the community,” Bogardus said. “We've done various children's events and a lot more recently than in the past. I think this is our first opportunity to do an adult event this year.”

Jordan Reineke, a School Resource Officer, would be at the schools once a week and during that time he got to know some of the kids pretty well.
“Some of these kids have older siblings and go wait for them at the middle school,” said Reineke, “so I’d meet them over there and I’d toss the football around with them sometimes. So there was snow on the ground that day and thought why not have a little snowball fight?”

On Friday, Wapakoneta Middle School seventh-graders got the chance to hear from Stephanie McDermitt, one of the student's mothers, about her trip to Burkina Faso, a country in Africa.
McDermitt went last summer with her church, Shawnee Alliance. She shared several facts about the Colorado-sized country, including its population, which is 17 million. She also told the students why the group went to Burkina versus any other country in the world.
“Burkina, for one, is a very poor country and it's in desperate need of attention,” she said. “There are a lot of people there that suffer a great deal.”
McDermitt told the class the country is located in the 10/40 window, an area in the Eastern hemisphere between 10 and 40 degrees north of the Equator which houses the majority of the world's Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists.

Many of us who have a furry friend or two do whatever we can to make sure that they are in tip top shape and have the best health possible, and the Auglaize County Humane Society has that same mindset.
Spay Days is coming back to the Humane Society, coinciding with February being National Spay/Neuter Month. The Humane Society is offering rebate vouchers that can be used with local veterinarians. A list of participating veterinarians is available at the Humane Society along with additional discounts they might have.
People can pick these up starting on Feb. 1, and the appointments must be made between Feb. 15 and March 15. A check for $25 for each dog and $15 for each cat will be mailed to you after the spay or neuter is completed.
“Pets need to be spayed and neutered,” said Deb Logan, manager of the Humane Society. “Female dogs need to be done before their first heat. It protects from stuff like pyrometra and mammary tumors and things like that. Male dogs need to be done between six months and a year and it helps prevent testicular cancer, it cuts down on their need to run and find a female, and it calms them down.”

In the Auglaize County Courthouse is a student who is about to finish up her last week as an intern in Judge Frederick Pepple’s office. Australian student Dania Ammouche, 23, received the opportunity of a lifetime when she got the chance to study law and broaden her knowledge even further in Wapakoneta for the past three weeks.
The journey started for her when she took a class that Judge Pepple was teaching at Muenster University in Muenster, Germany, during an exchange program.
“(Pepple) was one of my teachers and he does the internships for German students and I think he mentioned it one time and I wasn't sure if I was eligible because I was Australian. I spoke with him and he said I was able to apply so I applied and he said just give me the (available) dates, because my summer is different,” Ammouche said.
