4-H'er earns top honors at fairs

A girl of many talents and treasures — this is the best way to describe a local teenager who recently earned a slew of honors at more than one fair this year.

Much to her surprise, 14-year-old Samantha Neuman of New Knoxville won a total of four grand champion awards in horse contesting at the Auglaize County Fair last week, but the ribbons did not stop there. Neuman also nabbed first place at the county fair for a piece of artwork she made, and she received additional honors for both art and horsemanship at the Ohio State Fair.

This year, Neuman showed two quarter horses at the county fair — one a 12-year-old mare named Darby and the other a yearling named Rose. With Darby, Neuman received grand champion at the county fair for Western Pleasure, Western Horsemanship and Ground Roping, and with her yearling, she got grand champion in the Yearling Halter competition. All the awards received were in competitions within Neuman's age group.

Shortly after returning from state fair with the horse events, Neuman found out she qualified for state with her art project also. So she and her family headed back to Columbus, where she received an Outstanding of the Day honor for her colored-pencil piece.
