Will it be the experienced incumbent or the former longtime city council member who will be the next Wapakoneta City Auditor? Only the November 3 election results will tell.

Incumbent City Auditor Gail Walter, a Democrat, and her Republican opponent Wilbur Wells voiced their respective plans and goals for the position of Wapakoneta City Auditor at the Meet the Candidates and Learn the Issues event at Wapakoneta High School on Tuesday night. They each delivered opening and closing statements and prepared answers to questions they were notified of beforehand.

Walter’s appeal to the audience was her experience and her success as past and current city auditor. She said she believes what makes her most qualified for the position is her “expertise, experience and proven track record.” She noted that she has been auditor since 1994 and has been re-elected in each election since.

Wells stressed the importance of teamwork with city administration and department heads and highlighted his plans to budget efficiently. He served on the Wapakoneta City Council from January 1998 through December 2011, with 13 of those years serving as the chairperson on the finance committee.
