Five house pets— three cats and two dogs — perished in a Friday afternoon fire at 129 Koneta Street. Three cats and one dog survived.

Firefighters were called out at 5:59 p.m. to find flames coming from the upper ends of the home. No one was home at the time.

Firefighters used ladders and axes to gain entry to the attic windows so they could get water into the house. Wapakoneta Fire Captain Pat Mullen said the fire was concentrated in the living room and attic areas. The cause is still under investigation.

Mullen said Friday night that the identity of the property owner was unavailable. Online records from the Auglaize County Auditor’s office list the owners as Daniel and Luwanna Myers.

Also responding to the fire were Buckland and Botkins fire departments, along with Auglaize County Sheriff’s deputies and the Wapakoneta Police Department.

Mullen said firefighters were back on station at 8:25 p.m.
