The Auglaize County Board of Health discussed the topic of bacteria resistant to antibiotics during its regular meeting Thursday.

Medical Director Dr. Juan Torres brought up the subject in reference to a national news story a few weeks ago regarding the first case of bacteria being resistant to antibiotics of last resort in the U.S.

The issue is concerning since bacteria resistant to antibiotics could mean that certain antibiotics would be either less effective or not effective at all in fighting the resistant bacteria.

Torres noted that patients should only use an antibiotic exactly as prescribed. This includes taking the full prescription for the full term prescribed, even if the patient is feeling better, and he said patients should also not use leftover prescriptions after their period of intended use.

See Friday's June 10 paper for the full story.
