A number of local history-enthusiasts came to learn more about early surveying during “Taking the Lay of the Land: Early Surveys of Auglaize County,” a presentation given by retired bridge engineer Dan Bennett at White Memorial Library in Waynesfield on Thursday.
The event was sponsored by both the Auglaize County Historical Society and Heritage Trails Park District, and a number of people filled the back room of the library to listen to Bennett’s expertise in surveying.
During his presentation, he talked about the early surveys of the county and the state, while also showing attendees some maps and antique surveying tools.
“I’m just trying to teach surveying to the people — a lot of people don’t know the fun and the history on surveying,” Bennett said about his hopes for the presentation. “There’s a lot of history out here. You’ve got to know political science, you’ve got to know where’s happening what, what’s going on.”
