Two children were killed in an early morning fire just north of Waynesfield on Wednesday.
According to a report from the Auglaize County Sheriff's Office and the Wayne Township Fire Department, at 6:43 a.m. Wednesday, a neighbor called 911 to report a fire at 18339 State Route 196, north of Waynesfield. Wayne Township Fire and EMS and Waynesfield Police Department responded to the scene and found the home engulfed in flames.
Additional agencies were called in for mutual aid to help fight the fire and attempt to rescue two children who were trapped inside. Those attempts were unsuccessful and two children — ages 7 and 10 — were later found dead inside the residence.
A representative from the state fire marshal's office arrived on the scene the help with the investigation along with the Auglaize County coroner and detectives from the Auglaize County Sheriff's Office.
Agencies that assisted included the Uniopolis Fire Department, Westminster Fire Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol, REACT, Auglaize County Victim's Assistance and the Critical Incident Stress Management Team of Allen County.
No other details were released and the incident remains under investigation.
