On Friday, Wapakoneta Middle School seventh-graders got the chance to hear from Stephanie McDermitt, one of the student's mothers, about her trip to Burkina Faso, a country in Africa.
McDermitt went last summer with her church, Shawnee Alliance. She shared several facts about the Colorado-sized country, including its population, which is 17 million. She also told the students why the group went to Burkina versus any other country in the world.
“Burkina, for one, is a very poor country and it's in desperate need of attention,” she said. “There are a lot of people there that suffer a great deal.”
McDermitt told the class the country is located in the 10/40 window, an area in the Eastern hemisphere between 10 and 40 degrees north of the Equator which houses the majority of the world's Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists.
