County health board tracking local Hepatitis A cases

Auglaize County Board of Health met Thursday and approved the board’s current president Linda Kitzmiller of Minster and Vice President Dan Harpster for continuing in their roles for the new year.

Nursing Director Brenda Eiting brought up flu data and said they have administered 726 shots through Dec. 31 for this flu season, which represents an increase of 133 doses from the same time last year. The vaccine is recommended for those ages months and older.

Eiting also brought up the Hepatitis A outbreak. She said there have been increases in Hepatitis A in Ohio since Jan 2108; a statewide outbreak was declared in June 2018. There is also an outbreak in neighboring states like Indiana, West Virginia and Kentucky. Eiting said Hepatitis A virus can impair liver function and it is highly contagious. Last month Auglaize County had its first two cases of Hepatitis A. The health department is currently investigating another two cases that could potentially be Hepatitis A and are working with the Ohio Department of Health. Logan County has had one case and Allen County has see two, she reported.
