The majority of members within the local legal/law enforcement community oppose a proposed constitutional amendment that will appear on the November 6 election ballot, and Wapakoneta Rotarians heard why on Monday when Auglaize County Prosecuting Attorney Ed Pierce outlined the reasons Issue 1 is a bad idea for Ohio.
Pierce was joined by Wapakoneta Police Chief Cal Schneider and Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon at the meeting, although Pierce did the talking, pointing out the issue is non-partisan and simply bad for Ohio.
Part of the reason it’s a bad idea is the amendment was initiated by people who don’t live in Ohio, Pierce said. It was influence, and greatly financed, by California residents “who don’t know how we do things here,” he said.
Issue 1 is an attempt to add a new Section 12 to Article 15 of Ohio’s constitution. It aims “To reduce penalties for crimes of obtaining, possessing and using illegal drugs;” a majority yes vote is required for passage of the amendment.
