The Inaugural Chili Cook-off, held Saturday afternoon for The Grand Lake Improvement Association, not only fired up the taste buds of judges at the event held at Brew Nation in Celina, but gave those stopping in after a brisk Fall Art Walk downtown a chance to warm up with a $5 bottomless taster bowl of chili.
Twelve competitors faced off, each bringing their unique twist on traditional chili; at stake were cash prizes. Going home with the $100 top prize was David Post, a Celina native, who won these judges over with entry that he’d entered at a cook off at the local VFW with less luck. Post started making chili about 10 years ago, when he was in the U.S. Air Force stationed in England.
“My English friends loved it,” Post said.
Judging the competition were local members of the LIA. Mary Rampe, a home economics teacher; Doug Rentz, a self-described amateur pit boss and Dr. Stephen Jacquemin a professor of biology and water quality researcher.
