Overpass project may still happen

Wapakoneta City Council’s Streets and Alleys Committee will recommend the city give its blessing to the renaming of a portion of Bellefontaine Street to pay homage to Astronaut Neil Armstrong and his historic first steps on the moon on July 20, 1969.

Mayor Tom Stinebaugh informed the committee he has had conversations with Rep. Craig Riedel (R-Defiance) about the lawmaker’s efforts to appropriate money in the next state budget to help four separate projects related to Armstrong and the upcoming 50th anniversary of the moon landing. Stinebaugh said the Armstrong museum and airport are on the list, as is a beautification project at Interstate 75’s exit 111. The fourth item, if the city would rename a portion of Bellefontaine Street, would fund the cost of branding the I-75 overpass.

“You can only put two names on an overpass,” Stinebaugh said, “either the name of the city or the name of the street.”
