The Wapakoneta Eagles Aerie #691 may look a little more like a Marvel movie as the Superhero Bash for Pelotonia takes over the downtown hall on Saturday night.
The superhero themed dance benefits Pelotonia, a bike tour that raises money for The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, in Columbus, and eight local riders who will participate in the 2018 ride.
The ride takes place every year throughout Columbus and the surrounding area, with rides that range from just 25 miles to a two-day, 200 mile trek.
Joe Sawmiller, Staci Corsaro, Sunny Butler, Lena and Rick Springer, Kati Sawmiller, and John and Mariah Cunningham hope to raise enough funds through the Superhero Bash–as well as several other smaller fundraising events throughout the year–to complete this year's one-day, 100 mile ride.
Joe Sawmiller, one of the organizers of Saturday's Bash, says his biking is mostly recreational, and that 100 miles is a lofty goal.
But there's a reason why Sawmiller and his fellow riders opt to complete such a lengthy ride.
"Your butt's dragging by the end of it, but I look at it this way," Sawmiller said, "I feel like I want to quit, and it's a little bit like what the people we're riding for feel like. But they can't quit."
